Herts Open Studios 13 September - 5 October 08
The Open Studios are a real opportunity to meet local artists and craftspeople in their homes and studios. The entry to all venues is free and there is no obligation to buy. It's a chance to meet the artists, talk to them and see them at work. The range of work is diverse - and includes painting, sculpture, installation, ceramics, textiles, glass, jewellery, photography and film. I picked up a brochure on the event from the Tourist Information office at the Town Hall in St Albans. It lists all the artist and craftspeople, a photograph of their work, opening times and contact details. There is also a website here for more information. You can talk to the artist, discuss their work and techniques and you might leave with a unique piece of art, but there is no pressure to buy. I will defiantly be going to see Sue Gaffney's workshop on Normandy Road, I have known Sue for a long time but haven't seen her recent work. Her craft is textiles. It's good to support local artists.
One year I went to see a stained glass artist Helen Robinson in her studio and from that visit I signed up to a stained glass night class, that she ran. Susie and Daryl signed up for it too and with excellent tuition we produced, if I say so myself, some beautiful stained glass. I certainly gained a lot of respect for the craft, it's not an easy medium to work in and can be frustrating I found. It was worth while though, the cactus window I designed I see and enjoy every day.
