I have a soft spot for 'soft' sculptures, the kind made popular by the American artist Claes Oldenburg, it's the mixture of art, fabric and crafts I like. Claes Oldenburg's sculptures confuse our expectations of how ordinary objects should “behave.” Using ordinary, everyday items, he developed “soft” sculptures using pliable materials such as canvas and vinyl to create flaccid objects. I've included some photos of his work below, the light Switch, French Fries and Ketchup and Soft Toilet.
So when I came across the amazing Mad Tea Party Set by Kris DeGraeve, her website is TECHNOPLASTIQUE, I just had to have a go at making a cup and saucer. Kris is very clever, I followed her pattern and instructions, it fitted together perfectly. It must have been a labour of love for Kris to make a whole tea set as they are hand sewn and my one cup and saucer took me long enough! I chose a floral fabric to make mine a more 'English afternoon tea' teacup and saucer, I'm quite pleased with the results.
A few years ago I made my son a 'soft' sculpture skateboard, I actually made him three, that he hung on his wall. Skateboarding was /is his passion, he was studying art at the time so it was all relevant and I liked the challenge of designing and making them.
